Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day One

Key West May 6, 2012

My father used to tell people, "Don't invite the Ryans to your party, because they will show up....."

Apparently the organizers of the Key West Songwriters Festival didn't get the memo.

So, shortly after our arrival in Key West, we were off to the Southernmost Beach Cafe to partake in the last day of the festivities....

large_KW_0512_04.jpg

My sincerest apologies to the many talented artists we saw, but I don't remember most of their names...we saw so many, in so many configurations that it became hard to keep track of them all.....but I do remember these guys, a favorite of Karen's and the reason we came directly to the Cafe..... from Nashville, Tennessee

Love & Theft!

large_KW_0512_08.jpg

After a rousing medley of their hit, we wandered off to continue the festival....

The Smokin' Tuna....

large_KW_0512_12.jpg

large_KW_0512_14.jpg

Eventually, the 3AM wake up call clubbed us about the head and neck with a blunt object .... we devoured a couple of lobster rolls from DJ's on our deck and called it a night

Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day Two

Key West May 7

Our first and last days of this visit, you know, the days we had to deal with the airlines and their totally unreasonable insistence that we be at the airport at such and such a time, were the only ones that included any sense of urgency....we spent the other days chillin' out at the cottage until we felt the need to find some food, which never happened before noon....

Monday would be the perfect example....we strolled out early afternoon to the Schooner ....

large_KW_0512_16.jpg

large_KW_0512_15.jpg

I'm reasonably certain that we shared a blackened mahi melt sandwich ( with fries, please! ) there....at some point we struck up a conversation with Papa Joe...

His was a fascinating story....so fascinating, in fact, that he felt the need to tell it to us at least three times....but each telling was full of enough jovial melancholy to make the listening worthwhile......

large_KW_0512_17.jpg

We conch-frittered away the rest of the afternoon there listening to Raven.....

Fausto's was kind enough to sell us some food....I steamed some KW Pinks, and added pasta and green salads for a nice home made dinner on the deck.......

Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day Three

Key West May 8

Another languid morning on the deck.....it was probably close to noon when we first considered possibly thinking about maybe getting some food......after giving the matter sufficient thought (and a beer, or two, or .....), we rousted our lazy selves out of the house....

large_KW_0512_23.jpg

large_KW_0512_24.jpg

large_KW_0512_27.jpg

Time for lunch.....

large_KW_0512_25.jpg

The only food porn shot of the day, cream of portobello.....

large_KW0512_11.jpg

There was other food involved in this meal.....I vaguely remember having yellowtail.....I also vaguely remember Karen having , ummmmm, some other type of fish....I definitely remember both of us enjoying whatever it was we were eating.....

Below, the approximately 8 month old that didn't move from this spot for most of the time we were eating.....until a wayward, but apparently very tasty looking bird alighted a few feet away, and what looked like a tiny version of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom played out....In Living Color!!!!!

large_KW0512_10.jpg

The bird lived to fly another day........

And thanks to the wonders of modern technology, the camera reminded me that we were also at the Schooner to see Raven that night...

large_KW0512_12.jpg

This isn't the greatest photo, but I love the colors....

Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day Four

Key West May 9

We received a visitor today!

Our sibling from another mother, SistaCaf, is currently residing in Miami.....a couple of days before we arrived in Key West, Caf mentioned that she'd never been to the Conch Republic....so I offered her the prescient advice of the enterprising Henry Morrison Flagler:

"Very well then. Go to Key West."

so she did....

large_KW_0512_29.jpg

Caf "claims" to be from Philly....she also goes on to make even more bizarre "claims" to have spent some of her formative years in the bustling metropolis of Yonkers, NY.......

But I strongly suspect that she's actually a Kenyan Muslim Socialist hellbent on destroying America......but, as luck would have it, we're also Kenyan Muslim Socialists hellbent on destroying America, so we spent a great deal of time on the deck, planning all manner of terrorism and anarchy.....

Well, that's not exactly true...we saved the anarchy for another day....

Instead we hit the streets to show Caf the runnings.....a little time at The Whistle....

large_KW_0512_35.jpg

large_KW_0512_30.jpg

large_KW_0512_31.jpg

large_KW_0512_32.jpg

large_KW_0512_34.jpg

large_KW_0512_36.jpg

large_2012-05-10..-51_436.jpg

Next stop......

large_KW_0512_39.jpg

large_KW_0512_37.jpg

large_KW_0512_38.jpg

large_KW_0512_40.jpg

So I'm going to guess that we were over near the Bight at some point that day......or was it evening?......

large_KW_0512_43.jpg

large_KW_0512_42.jpg

Although there's no photographic evidence to support this theory, I'm reasonably certain that we spent way too much time at the Schooner that night.....I'm also reasonably certain that Raven was working that night, covering for the band that had cancelled.... and I, for one, am reasonably certain that I stumbled home that night in an exceptionally inebriated state of mind.....

Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day Five

Key West May 10

We took lazy to a new level today......we managed to drag ourselves out of the cottage just in time to be late for the 5:30PM soundcheck show at the Green Parrot......

The lighting conditions at the bar at that time of day are not conducive to picture taking, but I'd be remiss in not mentioning the band we saw.....The London Souls, a power trio right out of, believe it or not, NYMFC.......these dudes have obviously listened to a lot of Zeppelin and a lot of Cream, amongst others.....and I gotta love a band that can make me shake my rock 'n rollin' moneymaker with songs I've never heard .....

check this out....it's unmistakably and shamelessly inspired by " The Immigrant Song", but then goes off on it's own journey, like all emigrants.....

large_2012-05-10..8_159-1.jpg

and then off to Sunset Pier, where we were yet again just in time to be late.....but that worked out well for us as most of the tables cleared out moments after the sun set.....

large_KW_0512_45.jpg

large_KW_0512_46.jpg

I found some more food porn....

large_KW_0512_51.jpg

large_KW_0512_50.jpg

I'm being told that we went to the Schooner afterwards, and as I would never pass up that opportunity, I'll concede the fact...I'm sure we had a delightful time......

Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day Six

Key West May 11

Sadly, Caf is driving back to the mainland this day, but she did get a proper Key West sendoff as she and Karen joined the Conch Republic Chapter of The Ladies That Lunch for, I guess, tea and crumpets and watercress finger sandwiches and conversations that would surely make a battalion of Marines blush like school girls.........meanwhile, I remained at the cottage, picking the lint out of my belly button.....

See ya soon, SistaCaf!!

large_2012-05-10..-35_213.jpg

But we still had some last day in Key West chores to address, so soon enough, we started pounding the pavement again.....

large_KW_0512_56.jpg

large_KW_0512_57.jpg

large_KW_0512_58.jpg

large_KW_0512_59.jpg

I know that one of our stops that afternoon was at our favorite souvenir shop, Eaton Street Seafood Market.....we bought, packed and froze 4+ pounds of Royal Reds, and about a pound and a half each of yellowtail and black grouper fillets.....

With our errands done, it was time for Conch Tale Hour.....

large_KW_0512_67.jpg

For those of you that don't know, CTH is an eclectic mix of locals and like minded visitors, the locals there to celebrate the end of yet another work week, and the visitors there to celebrate, well, yet another celebration......it's always nice to reconnect with old friends and just as nice to meet some new ones....and it's reliably a great time.....Fridays starting about 6PM, currently at the Galleon's Tiki Bar....

Three little birdies tell me that a large contingent of us repaired to the Schooner to continue the shenanigans...who am I to argue? I'm probably not the best choice to argue with some pea-brained, feathered and apparently not very tasty looking creatures........

Love & Theft & Other Crimes of Opportunity, Day Seven

Key West May 12

If you thought I was a little pissy about the airlines earlier in this story, imagine my horror today.....

That's right kids...it's flying back to America day........

Being the savvy travelers that we are though, our flight isn't scheduled to leave until 7PM, which gives us ample time to pray for some non-Act of God to extend our stay.....

We cleared out of the cottage, tied up some loose ends and then started our (please dear God, make it not so!!!!) Bon Voyage party......

large_KW0512_28.jpg

Can you just see the joy in my face....?? the serenity...?? the sense of inner calm...???

Nah.....neither do I....

Please note that most of the people smiling in this pic have just arrived....and the other smile lives there...

large_KW_0512_82.jpg

I hear that the cliff divers at this establishment pay exorbitant fees for health insurance....

large_KW0512_27.jpg

In a disarmingly uncharacteristic move, we decided to do the smart thing and get some food in our bellies before we hit the road....and because we needed to payoff our final installment to the "Send the Schooner's Kids to College Fund", we returned to the scene of more than one crime of opportunity....

large_KW_0512_84.jpg

Y'all are gonna have to trust me on this one.....this was a blackened mahi melt sandwich...unfortunately, these are just the remnants......

large_KW_0512_85.jpg

The non- Act of God never happened so.....

Until Next Time.....

A Garden Hose and Extension Cord, Part One

Key West January 14-22, 2012 Part One: We Arrive.....

A 6AM flight out of LaGuardia thru Atlanta got us into Key West around 11AM on the 14th and a quick cab ride later we dropped our bags at our place....seriously, we dropped them and made a beeline to the Schooner....

KW_0112_05.jpg

We spent the rest of the afternoon there.... took some deli home from Faustos for dinner and called it an early night....

Fins, Fur and Feathers would have have been the perfectly alliterative title to this chapter, but the only fins we crossed paths with were plated and presented for consumption.....

Part Four: Our Happy Place

Karen and I will both gladly admit that we spend entirely too much time at The Schooner Wharf Bar when we're in Key West....it's usually the first place we stop upon arrival and the last place we're pulled, kicking and screaming, into a cab back to the airport.....and then of course, there's all those pesky days in between arrival and departure.......

But I think the both of us would also agree that the experience has enlightened, enriched and fulfilled us......who knew we might enjoy an open air bar with a view of the Harbor, a glimpse of blue sky, cold beer, good food, great bartenders, live music......?????.....gosh, that's so unlike us :-p

A Garden Hose and Extension Cord, Part Six

Part Six: A Garden Hose and Extension Cord??

One might think that there is some deeply profound meaning behind the title of this trip report, but there really isn't...

We were sitting at the bar at the Half Shell watching the Texans vs. Ravens playoff game, happily slurping down oysters and chatting with a local.....while discussing the game, the weather, the price of tea in China and the vagaries of life in the Keys, he used the hose and cord analogy to describe the tenuous connection Key West has to utilities from the mainland and the dire consequences that result when someone inevitably trips over one or the other, or even worse both.....

So don't try to read too much into things; I simply like the way the words sound together ...

Did someone say oysters at the Half Shell?

oh yeah, that was me....;-)

Key West

October 4-11, 2011

large_100_3173.jpg

The 5:40AM flight out of JFK seemed a daunting prospect, but it made complete sense when we stepped onto the tarmac at EYW a couple of minutes past 10AM...a quick cab ride had us at the little cottage on Simonton St we'd rented for the week......we decompressed for a while and then, with a hankering for a blackened mahi melt sandwich and a Red Stripe, headed out for the first of many visits to the Schooner Wharf Bar....

large_Key_West_1011_00.jpg

Just as we didn't get a picture of every sight we saw, neither did we get a picture of every meal we ate, so the rest of the story will be a random selection of images created whenever we remembered we had a camera, as well as whatever thoughts those images provide.....i.e. whatever thoughts haven't been lost to short term memory loss.......
